Daily routine
pathologe, 08:55h
A bit more than five weeks have passed now and already I can tell you: it is boring. Not necessarily the work I have to do, but everything apart from it.
This is for sure the most boring place on earth. Keeping in mind that money and western equipment is available nothing is being done to entertain the people over here. There are no bars or cinemas for entertainment during the weekends. Yes, there is a corniche and a short beach available, but the public restrictions are high.
Women have to cover themselves completely in public and are not allowed to drive cars. All restaurants have two sections: one "open" one where you can see inside through the windows, which is called "male section" and one with completely covered windows, the "family section". And this applies to all restaurants, disregarding if it is an expensive one or a fast food restaurant.
Coming to the fast food. All well known names are present here, the yellow "M", the king of burgers, fried chicken from Kentucky, Italian food out of a hut as well as for domino players, name it. And that also has got impact on the shape of the people. Similar the situation at the supermarkets. Mainly imported food is available there, most time marked with "imported from U.S." and full of sugars. A tribute to the oil companies, I guess.
So what to do? As my current visa allows me only to stay a consecutive 30 days maximum, I have to leave the country for one day so it will start counting again. Luckily Bahrain is not too far from where I am, so it is possible to get a ride with my colleagues every 4 weeks to there.
Bahrain. The brothel of the Middle East, as it is called. Haven't seen anything like that there so far. Maybe we are in the wrong corner when we visit.
The advantage of Bahrain in this case is that, although it is a muslim country as well, people are much more relaxed than in Saudi. Going to a mall will show you European dressed women and men amongst arabs. Shop assistants most times are filipinas, nobody bothers. And, of course, alcohol is available throughout the numerous bars and clubs. So you can have a nice night out with the colleagues, have fun and have a look at the girls, which does not even imply any further action.
Counting already backwards for the next trip to come.
